Horse Fencing with LIGHTNING Fence Droppers

Safe, highly visible equine fencing using 3–5 wire layouts. Droppers keep wires aligned and reduce gaps that can cause entanglement.

Equine Safety Principles

Horses require fences that are visible and reduce the chance of cuts or entanglement. LIGHTNING droppers help maintain even wire spacing and a straight fence line, so horses are less likely to test or push through. Prefer plain wire over barbed for equine areas, and include a visible top line.

  • Height: 1.3–1.5 m overall.
  • Wires: 3–5 plain; use at least one visible top line (tape/rail/hot wire).
  • Posts/Droppers: Posts at 8–10 m; droppers every 2–3 m for a clean, safe span.

Recommended Configurations (Horses)

Setup Height (approx.) Wires Spacing (bottom → top) Post spacing Dropper spacing Notes
3-wire droppers 1.4 m 3 plain (top hot/visible) 400 / 500 mm 8–10 m 2.5–3 m Low density paddocks; add visible sighter on top wire.
4-wire droppers 1.45 m 4 plain (1–2 hot; top visible) 280 / 320 / 350 mm 8–10 m 2–3 m General equine boundary or day yards.
5-wire droppers 1.5 m 5 plain (2 hot; top visible) 220 / 260 / 300 / 320 mm 8–10 m 2 m High activity areas, laneways and shared boundaries.

Improving Visibility

Hot top wire or tape

Use a wider conductor (poly tape/rail) as the top sighter. Horses see it better and respect the fence.

Dropper frequency

Closer droppers (≈2 m) create a flatter, more uniform presentation that’s easier for horses to read and avoid.

Installation Overview

  1. Install strainer assemblies and corners to full height (1.3–1.5 m).
  2. Set line posts at 8–10 m; plan gate and laneway visibility.
  3. Run and strain wires from bottom up; fit insulators for hot lines.
  4. Clip LIGHTNING droppers at 2–3 m; check the top line is clearly visible.
  5. Test energiser, earth system and warning signage where required.
Avoid barbed wire in equine runs. Use plain wires with hot offsets if extra deterrence is needed.

Horse Fencing FAQs

Plain high-tensile or coated wire. Add a visible top line (tape/rail) and electrify as needed to discourage contact.

2–3 m is typical; use ~2 m where visibility and straightness are most important (laneways, yards).

Yes. Clip LIGHTNING droppers between posts to stabilise spacing and add a visible top conductor.
